The pin diameter used for checking splines is picked so that the pins touch the spline teeth on or as close to the pitch diameter as possible. The pressure angle of a spline is the angle between where the pitch diameter meets the involute curve and a tangent point on the base diameter (fig. 4).

Aug 19, 2014 · Dry splines can be kept going very nicely indeed, I have no doubt of it as many old hands here are talking from experience. But those bikes need to be in regular use. Take a bike with dry rusty splines that's working fine and put it away for a year or two...come back to it and I bet it needs a spline lube.
